With his hand raised in acknowledgement of salutes, Chancellor Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) walks down the steps to the Zeppelinfeld during Reichsparteitag (Reich Party Day) ceremonies in Nuremberg. Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess (1894-1987), is immediately behind him. The Nazis 7th Party Congress was named the 'Rally of Freedom' in celebration of Germany's liberation form the Treaty of Versailles epitomised by the Nazis' reintroduction of compulsory military service.
