'Gaveston's head shown to the Earl of Lancaster', 1864. Piers Gaveston, 1st Earl of Cornwall (c1284-1312) was an English nobleman and a favourite of King Edward II of England. In 1312 he was condemned to death in Warwick for violating the terms of the Ordinances. Two Welshmen ran him through with a sword, before beheading him.
