'Cromwell Resolving to Refuse the Crown', c1858, (1911). In 1657, Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was offered the crown by Parliament as part of a revised constitutional settlement, Cromwell did not respond for six weeks. On 13th April 1657 in a speech to Parliament Cromwell formally denied the offer. From Bibby's Annual 1911. [J. Bibby & Sons, Liverpool, 1911]
