St. Matthew writing his Gospel, Anglo-Saxon work, c1062-65. Opening page of the gospel of St. Matthew, one of 4 gospels at Rhiems, France. Probably given to St. Remi by Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia (England) in memory of his son Burchard who was buried at St. Remi in 1061.
