Citadel of Salah ad-Din, Lattakia, Syria, c1950s. Originally Byzantine, Lattakia became part of the Crusader Principality of Antioch in the early 12th century. Known as Saône (Arabic Sahyun) the castle was heavily refortified. It fell to Saladin in a three day siege in 1188. The citadel was designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.
