Immigrants to the USA landing at Ellis Island, New York, c1900. They head for the processing centre, each carrying a paper with an entry number which they hope will soon be traded for a visa. Ellis Island served as the main immigration point for the US from 1892-1943, processing some 20 million immigrants. (Colorised black and white print).
