Dartmouth Castle, Devon, 2012. General view of the castle from the mouth of the River Dart. Begun in the late 14th century, the castle stands on a rocky promontory which juts out into the Dart estuary. Built to protect the merchants of Dartmouth, it was one of the earliest castles designed with artillery in mind.
