Walmer Castle from the beach, Kent, c2000-c2017. The castle commands approaches to the busy anchorage of The Downs. The shingle beach provides a clear line of fire from its gun ports. Walmer is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The chambers on the upper floors have been repeatedly altered to reflect the requirements of successive Lord Wardens.
