'The South View of Reculver-Abbey in the County of Kent', 1735. View of St Mary's church, the remains of which still stand on the cliff at Reculver today. The original 7th century church was built on the site of an abandoned fort. In 1809 most of the church was pulled down, but the 12th century towers, known locally as the 'twin sisters', were retained as a navigational aid. When the original spires were destroyed by a storm c1819, they were replaced with similar shaped, open structures containing weather vanes (they were removed c1930).
