Carisbrooke Castle, Newport, Isle of Wight, early 19th century. The keep of Carisbrooke Castle stands on a man-made earth motte and was built shortly before 1136. King Charles I was imprisoned in the castle for fourteen months before his trial and execution in 1649. Shown here: Governor's Apartments, the Keep (on top of the hill), the Well House.
