'The North View of Dover-Castle, in the County of Kent.', c1735. An earlier earthen castle was rebuilt in stone in the 1180s by King Henry II, and throughout its history it was constantly adapted to meet changing military needs. The strategic importance of Dover has long been recognised, and the castle remained a military site until the end of World War II.
