Plan of Carlisle Castle, Cumberland, late 18th century. Norman motte and bailey castle in Cumbria, near the ruins of Hadrian's Wall. William II of England ordered the castle to be built to keep the northern border of England secured against the threat of invasion from Scotland. Construction began in 1093.
