'Entrance to the Valley of Petra.', c1880. Arch marking the way into the Nabataean city of Petra, now in Jordan. Nabataea was conquered by the Roman emperor Trajan in 106 AD, and annexed to the Roman Empire. This view is possibly of a Roman triumphal arch, spanning the Siq (main entrance to the site), which collapsed in 1896 following an earthquake. Published by C. Appleton and Co.
