'His Royal Highness Frederick, Duke of York', c1820s. Engraving after a painting. Prince Frederick (1763-1827) was the second son of George III and heir to his elder brother George IV. His military command in an ill-fated campaign in the Netherlands inspired the rhyme The Grand Old Duke of York. Subsequently, as Commander-in-Chief of the Army from 1795, he instituted a range of reforms that put the army in good stead for the wars to come, including founding the military college at Sandhurst in 1802.
