'Mazarin', Cardinal Mazarin, (c1820s). Italian-born French politician Jules Mazarin (1602-1661, born Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino) succeeded his mentor, Cardinal Richelieu, as Chief Minister of France in 1642, holding the office until his death.
