Napoleon goes aboard the Northumberland for his journey to St Helena, 8 August 1815, (c1850). Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) surrendered to a British naval officer, Captain Maitland of the HMS 'Bellerophon'. He was taken to Plymouth and from there to Torbay, where he boarded HMS Northumberland bound for St Helena, where he remained in exile until his death in 1821.
