Arhat, Japanese, late Kamakura period, 14th century, (1886). In Buddhism, the term arhat can describe someone who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved nirvana, or someone far advanced along the path of Enlightenment, but who may not have reached full Buddhahood. 19th century reproduction of a painting on silk formerly attributed to Mincho, now attributed to a follower of Ryozen.
