'George Frederick Handel', (1919). German baroque composer Handel (1685-1759) lived much of his life in England, where he composed his masterpiece, Messiah. From the Chandos Portrait painted by Sir John Thornhill in 1720 for the Duke of Chandos. Handel is shown aged thirty-five, at the keyboard.
