Mont Orgueil Castle, Jersey, 1894. Mont Orgueil Castle (also known as Gorey Castle) was built in the 13th century to defend Jersey from possible French invasion after the division of the territory of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204. The castle remained the island's primary defence until the advent of gunpowder made it indefensible from the neighbouring Mont St Nicholas hill. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes.
