'A Whip for Van Tromp, the Admiralty', 1883, (c1902). Painting in the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester. Another version of the picture is entitled 'A New Whip for the Dutch'. Chief Secretary to the Admiralty Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) and the Earl of Sandwich are holding a meeting around a table with a large model of a warship. Van Tromp refers to Cornelis Tromp, a Dutch naval officer who fought in the first three Anglo-Dutch Wars. From The Nation's Pictures.
