Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., USA, c1900. Nicknamed 'The Castle', the first Smithsonian building was completed in 1855. Built of Seneca red sandstone, it was designed by James Renwick and initially held the entire institution including a gallery, a natural history collection, and a laboratory.
