Lismore Castle, County Waterford, Ireland, 1894. Originally built as the sister castle to Ardfinnan Castle in 1185 to guard the river crossing, the castle site was occupied by Lismore Abbey, an important monastery and seat of learning established in the early 7th century. The castle was largely re-built in the Gothic style during the mid-nineteenth century by William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes.
