'The Last of Temple Bar, 1877', (1897). Temple Bar was the principal ceremonial entrance to the City of London from the City of Westminster. In the 19th century it became a bottleneck for traffic, and the late 17th century arch of Portland stone designed by Christopher Wren was dismantled. (It was later re-erected near St Paul's Cathedral). From Old and New London, Volume I, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris & Melbourne, 1897]
