'Cornhill in 1630', (c1872). Cornhill, a street in the City of London, is the area where London's financial importance as a financial centre originated. Between 80 and 100 homes were destroyed by a fire in 1748, and a series of building acts were later passed to make buildings less susceptible to fire.
