Sacheverell Cards', (c1872). Pack of cards illustrating the career of Dr Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724), English High Church clergyman and politician. Sacheverell preached two sermons strongly criticising the Whig Government's policy regarding the church in 1709. After a trial he was suspended from preaching for two years, which contributed to the outbreak of rioting in London and elsewhere in the country (Sacheverell Riots) in 1710. The riots contributed to the government drafting the Riot Act in 1714. From Old and New London, Vol. II: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places, by Walter Thornbury.
