'Whitehall, Looking Towards the Holbein Gateway', (1881). The Holbein Gate, entrance to the Palace of Whitehall at Westminster, then a village outside London. The monumental gateway was constructed in 1531. On the left is the Banqueting House, with tree trunks being transported by cart in the foreground. The Palace was the main residence of the English monarchs from 1530 until 1698, when most of it was destroyed by fire. The Holbein Gate was demolished in 1759.
