Latham's plane, 1909, (1932). French aviator and display pilot Hubert Latham, (1883-1912) made the first overland flight in Germany on 27 September 1909, between the flying fields of Tempelhof and Johannisthal. Among his other achievements were: first powered attempt to cross the English channel; setting of three altitude records up to 1,384 metres; first successful 'Landing on Water'; first over-city flight, Berlin. Latham was also the first person to shoot wild fowl (duck) from an aeroplane, and the first person to smoke a cigarette while piloting an aeroplane. Eugene and Moritz Garbáty, who were Jewish, were driven out of business by the Nazis in the late 1930s, and forced to sell their factory which lay empty for over 70 years.
