'A Repast in the Monastery', 1865-1875, (1939). Also known as 'Meal': poor people beg on the floor, as well-fed Russian orthodox priests sit at a table, with more wine being opened on the left. Vasili Perov (1834-1882) was a founding member of Peredvizhniki, a group of Russian realist artists who formed an artists' cooperative in protest at academic restrictions. The movement later became the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions. Perov visited Germany and Paris, and was a professor at Moscow School of Arts, Sculpture and Architecture. Painting in the collection of The State Russian Museum, St Petersburg, Russia. From "The Russian State Museum". [State Art Publishers, Moscow and Leningrad, 1939]
