Giffard's balloon exhibited at the Paris World's Fair, 1878, (1932). French engineer Henri Giffard (1825-1882) built a spherical balloon with a gondola accommodating 40 passengers. It was used to take aloft visitors at the International Exhibition(Exposition Universelle) in Paris. By the end of the fair, 35,000 passengers had flown over the city. From "Die Eroberung Der Luft", (The Conquest of the Air), cigarette card album produced by the Garbáty cigarette factory, 1932. Eugene and Moritz Garbáty, who were Jewish, were driven out of business by the Nazis in the late 1930s, and forced to sell their factory which lay empty for over 70 years.
