Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition, 1897, (1932). Swedish engineer and aeronaut Salomon August Andrée (1854-1897) perished during a failed attempt to reach the Geographic North Pole by hydrogen balloon. The 'Örnen' ('Eagle') crashed onto the ice. Andrée and his companions Nils Strindberg and Knut Fraenkel were unhurt, but with inadequate clothing and equipment, they did not survive the Arctic winter. Eugene and Moritz Garbáty, who were Jewish, were driven out of business by the Nazis in the late 1930s, and forced to sell their factory which lay empty for over 70 years.
