LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin, 1928, (1932). The German 'Graf Zeppelin' was the most successful airship ever built. In October 1928 the Graf Zeppelin made its first intercontinental trip, a 9,926-kilometre (6,168 mile), 111-hour crossing from Friedrichshafen in Germany to Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA. Between its first flight in 1928 and retirement in 1937, it made 590 flights and covered over a million miles. From "Die Eroberung Der Luft", (The Conquest of the Air), cigarette card album produced by the Garbáty cigarette factory, 1932. Eugene and Moritz Garbáty, who were Jewish, were driven out of business by the Nazis in the late 1930s, and forced to sell their factory which lay empty for over 70 years.
