'Franz I', (1933). Portrait of King Francis I of France (1494-1547) who ruled France from 1515. He is regarded as France's first Renaissance monarch and his kingdom underwent great cultural advances during his reign. In foreign policy he was a contemporary and rival of Charles V of Spain and Henry VIII of England. He appears clean-shaven in this likeness, said to be after a miniature made in 1517 by Jean Clouet. From "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte", a book of cigarette-card portrait miniatures of figures in world history from the last four hundred years. [Germany, 1933]
