'John Law', (1933). Portrait of Scottish economist John Law (c1671-1729) who believed that money was only a means of exchange and did not constitute wealth in itself, with national wealth depending on trade. Law was Controller General of Finances of France under the Duke of Orleans, regent for the young King Louis XV. From "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte", a book of cigarette-card portrait miniatures of figures in world history from the last four hundred years. [Germany, 1933]
