Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick, Allerdale, Cumbria, c1955-c1980. View of the stone circle, looking south-east and showing the whole main circle of stones, and a partial view of a smaller rectangular-shaped enclosure inside. Castlerigg Stone Circle dates between the Late Neolithic period and and Middle Bronze Age period (c2400-1000BC). This site has a large oval-shaped enclosure composed of around 41 stones, some of which have fallen, and some are smaller stones. It measures approximately 32m north-south and 29m east-west, and in the south-eastern corner is a rectangular-shaped internal enclosure. The image focuses on the whole circle, and shows two large standing stones which are either side of a large gap, possibly a passageway or entrance, on the left hand side. The stone circle has been in the care of the state since 1883, and is currently cared for by English Heritage.
