Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, St Nicholas' Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, c1955-c1980. A partial view of St Nicholas' Cathedral east window, seen through an alleyway with stairs leading to the cathedral from Dean Street, flanked by buildings with shops on the ground floor and residencies above. The cathedral has had its status since 1882, and was a parish church before that. The traceried east window of the cathedral can be seen through the alleyway from Dean Street, as well as the top stages of the west tower, which has corner buttresses that support a square lantern with corner pinnacles and central spire. To the left of the alley and steps is no 23 Dean Street, which has a shop front on the ground floor, and the residence of a church caretaker above. In the image the shop is a music store, and to the right of the alley is a shop front with a sign reading: 'Ernest Harker Furnishings Ltd'.
