'Churchill Visits Battered Malta', 1943, (1945). British Prime Minister Winston Churchill walking among ruined houses in the dockyard area of Valletta. The strategically important Mediterranean island of Malta suffered severe bombing during the Second World War. The George Cross was awarded to the island so as to "bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people". Churchill (1874-1965) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and again from 1951 to 1955. From "The Life and Times of Winston Churchill", by Malcolm Thomson.
