'West End of Downing Street, "No.10" and a Glimpse of the Foreign Office', c1935. Number 10 Downing Street in central London is the official residence of the British Prime Minister. Number, 11, next door, is the official residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The street was built in the 1680s by Sir George Downing. This view shows members of the public walking along the street. Security gates were installed in the 1980s, preventing public access.
