'Felton admits that he killed the Duke', 1897. English politician and courtier George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), was adviser to James I and then Charles I. He was murdered by John Felton (1595-1628), a disgruntled Puritan naval officer, who was a member of one of Buckingham's unsuccessful expeditions. Although Felton was a hero in the public's eyes for having killed the hated royal favourite, he was condemned to death and hanged at Tyburn on 29 November 1628. From "The Comic History of England" by Gilbert Abbott A Beckett, with satirical illustrations by John Leech. [Bradbury, Agnew & Co, London, 1897]
