King Francis I of France, 16th century, (1849). Portrait of Francis I (1494-1547), regarded as France's first Renaissance monarch. He is depicted in an ermine-trimmed robe patterned with the royal fleur de lys emblem, and demonstrates his power by resting his feet on a pair of lions. 19th century illustration after a miniature from "Recueil des rois de France", (a history of the French monarchs) published 1545-1566, by Jean du Tillet, in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris. From Volume 2 of "Le Moyen Age Et La Renaissance", (The Middle Ages and the Renaissance), edited by Paul Lacroix, artistic direction by Ferdinand Seré [Paris, 1849]
