'Prince Rupert', c1640, (early-mid 19th century). Portrait of Prince Rupert, Royalist cavalry commander of the English Civil War. Rupert (1619-1682) was the third son of the Elector Palatine Frederick V and Elizabeth, daughter of James VI of Scotland. In 1642 he came to England and fought for the Royalists in the Civil War. He spent his last years conducting chemical, physical and mechanical researches, including work on mezzotint methods, gunpowder and alloys.
