'First meeting of George III with the Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz', 1761, (mid 19th century). King George III of Great Britain (1738-1820) succeeded to the throne when his grandfather, George II, died suddenly on 25 October 1760. The search for an appropriate wife intensified. On 8 September 1761 in the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, the King married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), whom he met on their wedding day. They were crowned at Westminster Abbey a fortnight later. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]
