'Lucy Percy, Countess of Carlisle', c1635-1637, (early-mid 19th century). Portrait of English socialite Lucy Hay, Countess of Carlisle (1599-1660). The Countess was involved in intrigues during the English Civil War, and may have spied for both sides simultaneously. She is said to have pawned her pearl necklace to raise money for royalist troops. Engraving after a painting in the collection at Petworth House, West Sussex.
