'Elizabeth Dutchess of Albemarle', 1734. Portrait of English aristocrat Elizabeth Monck, Duchess of Albemarle (1654-1734). After her first husband died, she became known as 'the Mad Duchess of Albemarle', as she was convinced that the Chinese Kangxi Emperor wished to marry her. Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu supposedly disguised himself as the Emperor of China and asked for her hand in marriage, which she accepted. 'From a very rare print in the Gulston Collection'.
