'New Merchant Maiden Hospital, Lauriston Lane, Edinburgh', c1830. The Merchant Maiden Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, was founded by Mary Erskine in 1694. The hospital, which housed and educated poor children, moved to the building in Lauriston in 1818. ('Hospital' was a term given to an endowed charitable foundation).
