'The Bathos', 1807, (1827). The figure of Time expiring, collapsed against a broken column, with the blade of his scythe snapped and his hour glass smashed, blowing out smoke from his broken pipe. Symbols of destruction include: a bankrupcy notice served on Nature, a tombstone, a clock without hands, Phaeton falling from his chariot, a will, a shop-sign for 'The World's End', a gallows, a burning impression of Hogarth's print "The Times". The ground is littered with various broken objects. Engraving after the original of 1764 by Hogarth. [Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme, London, 1807]. From "The Works of Wiliam Hogarth", Volume II, by The Rev. John Trusler. [J. Goodwin, London, 1827]
