Dover Castle, Kent, c1955-c1980. A view of Dover Castle, seen from the south, with the Outer Harbour wall and two boats in the foreground, and a view of the white cliffs and castle in the background. The medieval castle at Dover sits on a site that was occupied by an Iron Age hill fort, positioned here to overlook the straits of Dover and the English Channel. The current castle was built c1155 and has a keep with 18th century houses surrounding it, and two circles of walls with tower that date from the medieval period. Beneath the castle are tunnels and passages which date to the 13th century and were renovated in preparation for defence against invasion during the Napoleonic period. The castle is now cared for by English Heritage.
