Memorial column near Lemmington Hall, Edlingham, Northumberland, c1955-c1980. A distant view of the column around 400m south of Lemmington Hall with fields and foliage in the foreground. The column was originally erected in Surrey in 1786 by Sir John Soane to commemorate the parents of James Evelyn. It was moved to Northumberland in 1928 by Sir Stephen Aitchison which entailed using a light electric railway constructed especially for the column to be moved. The column is ashlar on a squared-stone base, and has a low platform. At the base of the column is a serpent that swallows itself, and at the top of the column is an eternal flame, standing at around 15 metres in total.
