Kingsgate Bridge and Durham Cathedral, County Durham, c1963-c1980. A general view of Kingsgate Bridge, seen from the east bank of the River Wear, and looking west, showing the full lenth of the bridge and a partial view of the cathedral in the background. The footbridge was constructed in 1963 with reinforced concrete, made with white cement and Shap granite. The bridge has two lengths joined close to the west bank of the river, and two large V-shaped piers over the river to support the pathway. In the background is a partial view of the east elevation of the cathedral, a former Benedictine Priory, showing the crossing tower and the north and south transepts either side. The cathedral was started in the 11th century, but work was carried on after this, and the upper stages of the crossing tower date to the 15th century.
