'Earl of Lichfield', 1839. Portrait of Thomas William Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield (1795-1854) Postmaster General and British Whig politician. He served under Lord Grey and Lord Melbourne as Master of the Buckhounds (an officer in the Master of the Horse's department of the British Royal Household). Anson was forced to sell off the entire contents of his Shugborough Hall estate as a result debts from his gambling and lavish entertaining.
