'Taking the Little Snow-town', 1891, (1965). 'Scene from a Siberian village entertainment', painted in Krasnoyarsk, inspired by the artist's childhood memories. A miniature town was traditionally built from snow and ice on the last day of Shrovetide. One group would guard the town while the other attacked. The game possibly originated with the Cossacks in remembrance of the subjugation of Siberia. Painting in the State Russian Museum, St Petersburg. From "Russian Painting of the 18th and 19th Centuries" by Vladimir Fiala. [Artia, Czechoslovakia, 1965]
